NATIONAL 5 - COMPOSITION SKILLS
FEBRUARY MID TERM - HOMEWORK
Create an 8 or 12 bar melody for Section A of your piece.
Things to consider:
If you have completed your melody and you are happy with it (even better if it is on musescore or Sibelius) try working out what chords harmonise with each bar, there may even be two chords per bar. If you can play your melody on the keyboard or piano you can try out whether your chords work by playing them together with your melody.
SUBMISSION DATE FOR HOMEWORK:
FRIDAY 16TH FEBRUARY.
Things to consider:
- What style will you chose? Ideally a Scottish piece (Waltz, Strathspey, Jig or Reel) but the options are endless.
- What do you need to include from your chosen style to convey the correct sound- i.e if you have chosen Strathspey you will need to include Scotch Snaps in the rhythm. If you have chosen a reel it will need to include a lot of fast running quavers.
- Have a listen to a few recordings in your chosen style to get some ideas for your piece.
- Will your piece be Major or Minor?
- Which instrument will play the melody?
- You should write in 4 bar phrases (I.e two 4 bar phrases if you write an 8 bar melody or three 4 bar phrases if you have chosen a 12 bar melody) each of these phrases should end with a CADENCE. Ideally you should end your melody with a perfect cadence (chords V to I) and perhaps finish others with an imperfect cadence (chords *- V)
